As we commemorated moms everywhere just over a month ago, let us not forget the countless sacrifices and contributions of fathers, single dads, grandparents and forefathers. Let us all pay tribute to our family father figures and awesome dads for life. As little girls used to exclaim, “I may find a prince, but daddy will always be my king!” In Malaysia, Father’s Day is always celebrated on June 18 annually.

A mother’s work may never be done, but a father’s job is equally as challenging and cumbersome. In addition to being head of the family, fathers are traditionally the bulwark figure in many families. They are perceived as the strength and security within most households. The father is viewed as the caretaker and bread-winner, whilst the mother is the caregiver and homemaker. Fathers are revered as a symbol of power, and worshipped for their unbridled passion and focus towards their goals and commitment in our lives.
Patriarchal Parenthood
The perils of modern parenthood have seen many fathers juggling multiple roles within common households. Fathers typically shield and protect their family members from calamities and adversities, be it physical or economical. Many such extended families encompass immediate members as well as distant relatives. Dads bring home the money while moms tend to the home. Such stereotypical and myopic view or perception of the traditional family still exist until today, and this continues to persist in today’s patriarchal society.

Father’s Day is truly a celebration of the family patriarch. Let us all ponder on the roles and responsibilities of fathers through their unconditional sacrifices and contributions to family, community, society and country. Although fathers generally do not show or display as much emotions as compared with mothers but deep down, they care just as much for their children and loved ones. Father’s Day is an opportune time to reconcile any conflicts or differences with your old man, and to make it up to your family’s saviour and protector. Love and loyalty may not be highly rated for some fathers, yet daddies deserve equal attention as mommies do on Mother’s Day – they are after all our superheroes without capes!
